RECP IN ALBANIA

Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) is a continuous, integrated, and preventive approach that helps businesses in Albania improve efficiency while reducing environmental impact and risks to human health. By using energy, water, and raw materials more efficiently, companies cut costs, minimize waste and emissions, and enhance product quality.

UNIDO’s RECP methodology guides enterprises through assessing operations, implementing tailored solutions, and continuously optimizing performance. This approach has proven especially effective for SMEs, enabling them to strengthen competitiveness, ensure compliance, and embrace sustainable growth. As costs for energy, materials, and environmental standards continue to rise, RECP offers a powerful tool for turning sustainability into innovation, resilience, and long-term success.

In Albania, RECP is being advanced through the “Business Partnerships & Solutions for SDGs” programme funded by Sweden. Phase I & II of the project focused on the Textile, Clothing, Leather and Footwear (TCLF) sector, where UNIDO worked with national experts and enterprises to design tailored RECP measures, deliver in-plant assessments, and build capacity through training and awareness-raising. Business cases developed in this process demonstrated clear short, medium, and long-term benefits for companies—ranging from cost savings and resource efficiency to stronger compliance with international standards. Study visits to Sweden and Tunisia further enriched the experience, exposing Albanian enterprises to global best practices and innovative solutions in sustainable production.

RECP GLOBALLY

Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) is all about producing more with less — using fewer resources, generating less pollution, and achieving higher productivity. Developed and promoted by UNIDO and UNEP, this globally recognized methodology has supported tens of thousands of manufacturing enterprises worldwide, helping them lower production costs, improve competitiveness, and reduce their environmental footprint.

For over 25 years, UNIDO’s RECP methodology has helped more than 6,000 enterprises in over 50 countries — both developed and developing — transform the way they use energy, water, and materials. Companies applying RECP have achieved remarkable results: tens of thousands of MWh of energy saved, millions of cubic meters of water conserved, tens of thousands of tonnes of CO₂ emissions reduced, and millions of euros in cost savings every year.

In Europe and the Eastern Partnership region alone, over 250 enterprises participating in RECP Clubs have realized concrete benefits, including 24,884 MWh in annual energy savings, 61,000 tonnes of material savings, 1.3 million cubic meters of water saved, €4.2 million in reduced production costs, and 41,255 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions avoided each year.

In Albania, UNIDO has been actively implementing RECP in key sectors such as textiles, agro-processing, and manufacturing, supporting local companies to enhance competitiveness, reduce operational costs, and align with international sustainability standards. By adopting RECP, Albanian enterprises not only contribute to environmental protection but also strengthen their position in regional and European markets, demonstrating that efficient, cleaner production is a pathway to sustainable growth and long-term profitability.

Who we are

UNIDO, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, is committed to promoting inclusive and sustainable industrial development in Albania. Through its mission in the country, UNIDO supports enterprises, national institutions, and development partners to enhance resource efficiency, adopt cleaner production practices, and align with international standards, ultimately fostering economic growth, environmental sustainability, and resilience.

As part of the United Nations Joint Programme “Business Partnerships & Solutions for SDGs”, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), UNIDO is helping Albanian companies integrate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their business practices. The programme focuses on extending national capacity, raising awareness, and demonstrating the benefits of RECP methodology in the textiles, clothing, leather, footwear, and agro-industrial sectors.

Through tailored assessments, actionable investment plans, and monitored implementation of RECP measures, the programme ensures measurable impacts—including cost savings, resource efficiency, and reduced environmental footprint. In addition, the initiative engages private sector actors as well as business support institutions such as chambers of commerce, business associations, technology parks, and accelerators. Exchange of experiences with Swedish partners further enriches the programme, providing valuable insights on innovation, competitiveness, and sustainable growth.

By empowering enterprises and national experts, UNIDO and its partners aim to strengthen Albania’s position in national and international value chains while contributing to the global Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.
