RECP CLUBS
As energy, material, and compliance costs continue to rise, Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) has become an essential tool for companies — particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) — to remain competitive and future-ready. By improving energy and water efficiency, optimizing material use, and reducing waste and emissions, RECP enables industries to thrive sustainably while contributing to global climate goals.
To scale up these benefits, RECP Clubs were established as a collaborative and cost-effective model that helps SMEs implement RECP in practice. They offer a structured platform where enterprises can identify inefficiencies, lower production costs, and improve their environmental performance — all while learning from each other’s experiences. This collective approach allows SMEs, which often lack the resources for individual consultancy, to benefit from targeted technical guidance, peer learning, and shared innovation.
Each Club brings together 8–10 enterprises from the same region or sector and guides them through a comprehensive training and coaching programme led by a certified RECP Facilitator. Over four to five months, companies participate in six interactive modules covering business profiling, energy, water and wastewater, materials and waste, chemicals management, and continuous improvement. Between sessions, enterprises conduct self-assessments to identify process inefficiencies and define practical, cost-saving actions. Facilitators and technical experts provide on-site coaching to help companies design and implement their own RECP Action Plans, culminating in certificates that recognize their commitment to sustainable production.
RECP Clubs also rely on the active involvement of local stakeholders — including municipalities, business associations, chambers of commerce, and universities — to create a supportive local network of knowledge and collaboration. These partnerships strengthen the visibility of SMEs within their communities and promote a regional shift toward cleaner, more resource-efficient industrial practices.
The results have been remarkable. Across participating regions, industries have collectively achieved over 102,500 MWh of annual energy savings, 1.7 million cubic metres of water savings, and a reduction of more than 121,900 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions — corresponding to the annual energy use of thousands of households and the CO₂ absorption of entire forests. The economic savings exceed EUR 1.7 million per year, proving that sustainability and profitability go hand in hand.
Beyond the measurable impact, RECP Clubs foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and environmental responsibility. By embedding RECP principles into their daily operations, companies not only reduce costs and risks but also enhance their competitiveness, product quality, and alignment with international sustainability standards.
Ultimately, RECP Clubs empower industries — both in developing and developed countries — to become more competitive, resilient, and environmentally responsible, directly contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
